Albert P. Hermann, known affectionately as Al, passed away on September 15, 2023, at the age of 77 in Atlanta, GA. He was born on August 2, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA. Al was a devoted husband to Nancy Hermann for 53 years and a loving father to his daughter, Annemarie [Brian] Claise, and his son, Drew [Kimberly] Hermann. He took great pride in his family and cherished his grandchildren, Tyler and Emma Cate, who fondly called him Albie.
Al had a passion for giving back and was known for his gregarious nature, intelligence, and quick wit. Early in life he was an Eagle Scout and those tenets carried into adulthood; he was a hard worker, honest, and loyal, with the added bonus of always being ready with a joke to bring a smile to those around him. In his work life, he had a successful career as a finance executive, starting with Xerox and Lanier Worldwide before transitioning to venture-backed start-up companies in Georgia. Later in his career, Al became a professor of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship at the University of Alaska at Anchorage.
During his time at the University of Alaska, Al established the "Entrepreneurial Edge" program, which included a lecture series, boot camp for entrepreneurs, and speed coaching events. He also revived the Alaska Business Plan Competition and created a minor program for entrepreneurship. Al's dedication to nurturing and investing in entrepreneurs led him to co-find the Alyeska Venture Management firm, where he mentored and supported aspiring business owners.
In his free time, Al enjoyed reading, word puzzles, learning facts about geography, keeping up with business trends, spending time with friends and family, and watching soccer and football. He continued his passion for helping people succeed in business into retirement, forming collaborative round tables in Forsyth County to support entrepreneurs as well as charities.
What we will remember the most and miss immensely is his unique talent for humorously teasing his friends and family, always bringing joy and laughter to their lives.
In memory of Al, contributions can be made to Jesse's House (www.jesseshouse.org) and Bald Ridge Lodge (www.baldridgelodge.org). These organizations held a special place in Al's heart and continue to make a positive impact in the local community.
There will be a Memorial Service on November 3rd from 5-6pm at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, GA. The family appreciates the support and condolences received during this difficult time.
May Al's memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
