Obituary for Anne Salyerds Francisco
Anne Salyerds Francisco, age 87, of Pensacola and Atlanta, died in Atlanta on Friday, January 5, 2018. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Edgar W. Francisco III, of Atlanta; her son, John Courtland Francisco and daughter-in-law, Megan Dutter Francisco, of Morrison, CO; her son, Edgar W. Francisco IV and daughter-in-law, Sherri Francisco, of Atlanta; and four grandchildren: Jack and Ryan Francisco of Morrison, Co., and Edgar (T. J.) W. Francisco V and Madison Francisco.
Anne was valedictorian of her Pensacola High School class of 1948 and a straight A student at Huntington College, Montgomery, AL. A loyal alumna of the Emory University Graduate School, she earned a master's degree with honors in Biology in 1954. She was one of the first group of four women admitted to that program. She met her husband, Edgar, at Emory University. They were married for 57 and ½ years.
She taught Biology for a numbers of years at Agnes Scott College, and when her husband enrolled in a doctoral program at Yale University, she was invited to teach the freshman biology course for pre-med students. She was honored as the "Volunteer of the Year" for work with the South Burlington schools in South Burlington. VT. She was co-sponsor of the Sea Scouts Troop on Lake Champlain, VT, and a member for many years of the executive committee, which ran the Burlington International Games, a youth Olympics program with Canada. She hosted their stays in Vermont and travelled with the teams to Canada on alternate years.
A lifetime Methodist, she was a leader of her young people's group at First Methodist Church, Pensacola, FL, where her mother, Myrtle Salyerds, taught Sunday school for 50 years. Anne also served on numerous church boards and committees in Vermont and Atlanta, while continuing an active participation in Pensacola historical society events.
