Barbara Norred Perkins passed away on June 4, 2018 after a short illness.


Barbara was born in Talladega County, Alabama on May 2, 1934, the daughter of the late Garnett Oliver Norred and Anna Watters Norred. She grew up in the small town of Talladega Springs, Alabama, and graduated as the Valedictorian of her senior class at Fayetteville, Alabama High School. She attended Judson College in Marion, Alabama, and graduated with a B.A. in English in 1956. She obtained a Masters Degree in English from the University of Mississippi and taught English at West Fulton High School in Atlanta until the birth of her first child.


In 1959, she married pharmacist Bynum Perkins in Atlanta, Georgia, and they resided in the Atlanta area thereafter. Together they had six children, and Barbara ran the household, raising the five boys and one daughter. After the births of her children, she obtained a Masters in Librarianship from Emory University in 1975. She enjoyed reading, attending to her homeplace in Talladega Springs, and visiting with her grandchildren.


Barbara is survived by her husband Bynum Perkins, her daughter Ann Norred Perkins of Birmingham, Alabama, her sons Lee Bynum Perkins of Atlanta (Betsy), Thomas Duckett Perkins of Houston, Texas (Kathy), Joseph Watters Perkins of Atlanta, Georgia, Philip Robert Perkins (Daniela) of Dunwoody, Georgia and William Garnett Perkins of Smyrna, Georgia. She also is survived by her brother Charles Garnett Norred (Andrea) and grandchildren Anna Gaillard Perkins, James (Jay) Bynum Perkins, and Isabella Maria Ronchetti Perkins, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Funeral Services will be held graveside in Talladega Springs, Alabama at the Talladega Springs Cemetery on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to fight the disease of autism.
