Bobby Smith

September 21, 1931 — February 7, 2023

Bobby Smith

Bobby Smith, 91, of Cumming, Georgia passed away surrounded by his loving family at his home on February 7, 2023.  Born September 21, 1931, he was the son of the late Inmon and Edith Smith.

Bobby traveled the world, but lived his life within walking distance of the Coal Mountain crossing. A lifelong member of the Coal Mountain community, Bobby was one of the oldest members of Coal Mountain Baptist Church.  He was always active in the church. At the age of 12, Bobby made 50 cents a week dusting the pews and putting wood in the iron stove to keep the original church warm each Sunday.  He would walk to church from his childhood home, and later from his residence until illness prevented him from doing so.

Bobby served in the United States Air Force and returned home to join the family poultry businesses, Smith Poultry and Inmon Smith Hatchery.  An “Eggman”, Bobby was one of the founders of Coal Mountain Egg Farms.  Well known in the egg and poultry industry, he also served on the original Board of Directors of Forsyth County Bank.

Bobby was a man of many interests. He was a Master Bowler and an avid golfer. He recorded a hole in one at High Hampton, North Carolina Golf Course. Bobby was one of the developers of Country Land Golf Club in North Forsyth.  He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and going to his grandchildren’s ball games.  His greatest joy came from mowing the grass with his Kubota tractor, growing tomatoes, and sharing his homemade ice cream with family and friends.

Bobby is preceded in death by his first wife, Opal Gravitt Smith; children, James Bobby and Mary Lydia; brothers, Loyd Smith and Edwin Smith.  He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia “Patt” Lawson Smith; Daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dennis Heusser; Stepson, David Martin; Mother-in-law, Mildred Lawson; Grandchildren, Kelli and Ben Cox; Step-Grandchildren, Kasey and Shawna Martin, Jessica and Chris Duncan, and Winn and Angel Martin; Great-grandchildren, Jordan, Allie, Kaitlyn, Kaleb, Connor, Astrid, and Dillon. Two great-great grandchildren and a host of other loving family members also survive.

A special thanks to the Bridgeway Hospice Family for their nurses and caregivers during Bobby’s extended illness.

Visitation will be held at Ingram Funeral Home on Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM and Sunday, February 12, 2023 from noon to 1:00 PM. Service will be held at Coal Mountain Baptist at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 12, 2023.  Interment will be at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Because of his love for Coal Mountain Baptist Church and its youth, donations can be made to Coal Mountain Baptist Church youth activities.
