Calvin " CAL" Thomas

CALVIN " C AL" ALFRED THOMAS, 85, of Dawsonville, Georgia passed away on February 21st, 2011 at Northside Hospital Forsyth. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy from World War II. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Torpedo man on a PT boat. He was engaged in the Navy Battle of Leyte Gulf and the taking of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Thomas of Dawsonville, GA; son, Clint Cody Thomas of Charleston, SC; daughters, Kandi Jill Thomas of Duluth, GA and Tammy Thomas Barnett of Duluth, GA; one sister, Betty Sue Tatum of Atlanta, GA; and 3 grandchildren.

In 1952 Cal Thomas, a recreational employee of the City of Atlanta, capitalized on the availability of the new park facilities for organizing a baseball league for young boys. This was the foundation for Buckhead Baseball at Bagley Park, which became an integral part of growing up in Buckhead for generations to come. The park was renamed for Frankie Allen, a beloved Buckhead Baseball umpire, in 1980.

The family will be having a private Celebration of Life Memorial Service at a later date.
