Charles Hollman Junior

Charles Hollman Junior, lovingly known as Charlie to his friends, Dad and Papa to his family, passed away peacefully on May 5 in the Atlanta, Georgia home he so proudly built for his family 53 years ago overlooking the Chattahoochee River. He lived a long and purposeful life of 95+ years with his beloved bride Dollie, who predeceased him by 4 years.

Charlie was born in Meriden, Connecticut to Charles Hollman, Sr. and Leila West on December 16, 1926. He met his wife and love of his life, Rosemarie “Dollie” Cessario at Meriden High School.  After graduating, like many brave men of his day, Charlie joined the US Army Air Corps and was awarded a World War II Victory medal.  He received an honorable discharge and went on to marry Dollie, and earn his Bachelor of Science degree from The Teachers College of Connecticut graduating in June of 1948.  Upon graduation, he planned to accept a very respectable job as a math teacher, but to better support his family and as God would have it, he was offered a sales position with International Silver Company which he accepted and quickly proved to be a natural and lovingly became known as a fabulous salesman!  He was quickly promoted and relocated his family to the South ultimately settling in Atlanta, GA. But Charlie was an entrepreneur and soon became the founder/owner of an Atlanta home building business, Mastercraft Home Builders along with his partner and dear friend, Wilbur Monroe.  They built many lovely homes in Sandy Springs, and he later became a partner in Riverside Associates who developed the Riverside and Weatherstone subdivisions.  After retiring from the building business, he started his own advertising marketing company, Charles Hollman and Associates and enjoyed that career with remarkable ease until his death.

Charlie enjoyed life.  He enjoyed his travels with Dollie and friends in the US and abroad. He loved music.  His passion for big band and jazz music started as a teen playing in jazz drumming competitions and once meeting Gene Krupa and receiving the honor of playing on his personal drum set. He went on to become the drummer in a local band performing many weekends in the Atlanta area at weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and the like.  You would often find Charlie listening to great music with friends in his infamous basement bar and later entertaining the grandchildren by playing the drums to one of his favorite Big Band tunes. He lived for delicious food, he loved a gorgeous sunset, he enjoyed athletics in his younger years, but he loved most being surrounded by his family in his home.

Charlie is preceded in death by his wife Dollie, his mother Leila, father Charles Sr., 2 brothers Bob and Ray, and 2 sons-in-law Tom Maguire and Lance Doyal.

He was blessed with five children, 13 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He is survived by his children Linda Maguire, Debbie Doyal, Diane and Roy Torbert, Doug and Jane Hollman, and Lisa Jones; his grandchildren Kelly and Andrew Caudell, Mauri and Greg Brune, Buck Doyal, Ivey and Jon Rucket, Phil and Casey Larson, Alex and Will Robertson, Charlie and Alex Hollman, Hillary Hollman, Rebecca Hollman, Mary Courtney and Kit Southwick, Clay and Laura Jones, Tessa and Matt Goodrich, and Troy Jones; and his great grandchildren Mason and Reagan Caudell, Mac and Thomas Brune, Lola Rucket, Tripp and Ellie Larson, Henry and Eva Jones, Charlie and Woods Southwick, and Pascal Goodrich.

We miss Mimi and Papa, who by grace, modeled for their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren what it looks like to love in sickness and in health, until death do you part. Charlie loved his family and he passionately loved his home he built on the river.  But at the very end of his life he seemed to understand that he was headed to his true, and perfect final home. By faith in God, we trust we will all meet again in that place, called heaven.
