Charlotte Starnes Phillips of Cumming, formerly of Decatur, Georgia and Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away on September 8, 2016. Charlotte leaves behind to cherish her memory, son, B. Eddie Phillips, II (Laura), son Jeff Phillips (Deborah), and daughter Leigh Ann Hunt (David), all of Cumming, her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, B. E. (Scout) Phillips, III, Jessica Phillips Morgan (Josh), Samuel Phillips, Haleigh Phillips Funsten (Alan), David Aaron Hunt and Avery Hunt, Wylie Morgan, Evie Morgan, and Jayce Funsten, her brother, Wayne Starnes, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends and adopted family. Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Beverly Edwin (Eddie) Phillips, her son, Scott Phillips, her granddaughter, Ginny Phillips, her parents, Wrightley E. and Ada McKinney Starnes, and her sister, Nancy Starnes Allen.
Charlotte loved children and spent her professional life as a special education teacher and administrator. She got her education and began teaching school while supporting her husbands sales career and raising her four children. Because of her professionalism and strong work ethic, she eventually rose to the position of Deputy Superintendent of Forsyth County Schools. Yet her professional accomplishments pale in comparison to the legacy of love and hope she leaves behind for all who knew her. She was devoted to her family, her work and her kids, as she called each new group of students. Charlottes door was always open and she welcomed everyone without judgment. Even years after her retirement former students stayed in contact with Ms. Charlotte and recalled all Charlotte had done for them. We will miss our mother, grandmother, great-grand mother, sister and friend in our daily lives. But we know she is with God and that she made the world a better place for having been here.
The family will receive visitors on September 11, 2016 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Charlottes life beginning at 4 p.m., the Rev. Michael ONeal, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlottes name to the Special Olympics of Georgia, St. Judes Childrens Hospital, or Georgia Relay for Life.
Ingram Funeral Home Crematory, Cumming, Georgia is in charge of arrangements.
