Clyde Ellis Hughes

Clyde Ellis Hughes, 88, of Welaka, FL. was born January 7, 1924 in Loganville, KY, passed away, on April 12, 2012 in Dawsonville, GA.

Clyde served in the Marines during WWII from 1941-1945 in the 6th Regiment 2nd Division and held the Lightweight Boxing Championship for all of his years of military service.

Clyde was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Throughout his life, he was a great example of a very kind and caring man that was always gracious and had a quick sense of humor. All who knew him and those who just met him loved him. For the past 35 years, Clyde has resided in Welaka, FL, with his wife, Joann, where he enjoyed each day on the water. He loved to canoe up and down the St. Johns River and enjoyed the outdoors as an avid hiker. His favorite time of day was 5:00pm, when Clyde would spend Happy Hour socializing with his wife and their Riverbend friends. Clyde loved spending time with his family. Near the end of his life, his stepson and daughter-in-law took him into their home in Dawsonville, GA, where he later died of natural causes.

Clyde is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 28 years, Joann Hughes; son and daughter-in-law, Clyde E. III Skip and Robin Hughes; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gary Bridges; step-son and daughter-in-law, Joe and LuAnne Segars; step-daughters, Dianne Wood and Linda Segars; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

In keeping with Clydes wishes, he was cremated. There will be a Celebration of his life on Saturday May 19, 2012 at 2pm at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Welaka, FL. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Riverbend Garden Memorial Fund. Arrangements by Byars Funeral Home, Cumming, Georgia. Online condolences at www.byarsfuneralhome.com
