Colonel Wallace Evans Jarboe, age 88 of Suwanee passed away Saturday, April 18, 2009. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at First Redeemer Church in Cumming with Dr. Richard Lee officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C. with full military honors. Colonel Jarboe enlisted in the U.S. Army, Med. Dept. in 1938 at age 18, and commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Medical Administrative Corps (MAC) upon completion of OCS in December 1941. During World War II, he was commissioned in the Regular Army, and in 1949 transferred to the U. S. Air Force where he had three tours in Washington, D. C. at Hq. USAF. He retired from the USAF in February 1970 as chief of AF Medical Facility Planning and Construction in the USAF, Surgeon Generals Office, Hq. USAF. From February 1971 to January 1985, he had a second career at Duke University as the project director for the planning, programming, design and construction of a 616 bed hospital. From 1981 to 1987, he served as Executive Director of the City of Medicine Program. He was elected President in November of 1991 of a newly formed USAF Medical Service Corps Association representing 2,500 active and retired commissioned officers. He received the Bronze Star for service in Italy, The Legion of Merit Award upon retirement from the USAF, and was Faculty Emeritus at Duke University Medical Center, one of the first hospital administrators to receive that honor.
Colonel Jarboe was preceded in death by his Parents George and Amanda Jarboe, Wife Betty Jo Jarboe and Daughter Elizabeth Jarboe Cheney. Survivors include his wife, Ava Hart Jarboe of Suwanee; daughter & son-in-law, Patti and Bobby Dwyer of Williamsburg, VA; step-daughter & son-in-law, Laurie and Shawn Loud of Cumming, GA; step-on & daughter-in-law, Brian and Pam Sheffield of Canton, GA; step-son, Brent Sheffield of Marietta. Eight grandchildren, Patrick and Peter Dwyer, Ashley and Whitten Loud, Alex and Matthew Cheney and Travis and Trevor Sheffield also survived.
