David Lee Ayres

David Lee Ayres, age 89, of Cumming, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Norma Jean (Holmes) Ayres with whom he shared 70 years of marriage and resided in the North Georgia Assisted Living Home in Dawsonville, Georgia.

David was born in Charleston, West Virginia on August 25, 1931 to John David and Lula Alice Ayres. He grew up in Charleston and soon after his high school graduation married his childhood sweetheart, Norma Jean. In 1951 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served a 4-year enlistment at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas. After his military service, they relocated to Atlanta to start the next chapter of their lives. David retired from Watkins Motor Lines.

He loved watching the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, and Georgia Bulldogs. He was an avid tennis and ping pong player in his earlier years and enjoyed playing with family and friends. He grew up playing the saxophone and piano and loved listening to classical and jazz music. He and Norma Jean were members of First Baptist Church in Dawsonville, Georgia.

David is survived by his wife and daughters, Cyndie (Baxter) Howell and Shelley (Dale) Moulder. He is survived by 5 grandchildren: Kristie Timms, John Moulder, April Jacobs, Stephanie Freund, and Anna Norton. He also had 12 great-grandchildren.

A private grave side service will be held at a later date in Cumming, Georgia.
