David Turner

David Anthony Turner, age 56, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Elizabeth Asbury Turner, and daughter Margaret Anne Turner, 18, a freshman at Armstrong State University in Savannah. David fancied himself "Eye-talian" because he was born January 18, 1958 in Calambrone (Pisa) Italy, where his father served in the US Army Dental Corp at Leghorn Field hospital. The family lived on many bases. Their fondest was Munich, Germany, where he and his five siblings had a magical time living in Bavaria. David attended Aquinas High School in Augusta, GA, and graduated from St Pius X High School in Atlanta, GA. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources, and a Master of Forest Resources, from the University of Georgia. David was head of procurement for Oconee Timber, where he managed logging and harvest operations. He became assistant director of the Georgia Forestry Association, and was a liaison with the Georgia State Legislature and pulp and paper companies including Union Camp and Georgia Pacific. He left the forestry industry to enter the chemical waste industry where he worked with Allwaste Services of Atlanta and Callaway Chemicals Company. David found his true calling as a science instructor at Dunwoody High School from 2002-2005, and at South Forsyth High School 2005-2008. He taught physics and chemistry at West Forsyth High School from 2008 until the time of his death. He was head coach of girls' varsity volleyball teams at Dunwoody and South Forsyth, taking both teams to state tournaments. Then David enjoyed refereeing volleyball with the Georgia High School Sports Association. David could light up a room with his humor and infectious laugh, bringing a smile to everyone around him. His love for his wife and daughter was evident to all. He was passionate about natural resources, his world view, faith, and teaching. He did whatever it took to get the best for his students and make sure they succeeded. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and school. David was preceded in death by his parents:Dr Charles and Anne (Moore) Turner;and parents-in-law:Mr C. Edward and Margaret (Boggs)Asbury. His survivors include five siblings and spouses: Mr George and Virginia (Turner) Holder, Mr Richard and Mary (Boyer)Turner, Mr Daniel and Susan (Turner) Clarke, Drs Christopher and Tanya (Gregory) Turner, and Vincent Turner; one sister-in-law and husband:Dr Kenneth and Sally (Asbury) Ortiz; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 4-6:30 Sunday December 7, and service noon Monday December 8, both at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, GA.
