Donald Gene Owens, age 84, passed away on February 15, 2025. Born on January 15, 1941, Donald lived a life dedicated to service, family, and his Christian faith.
Donald proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Saratoga (CVA-60). He earned three associate degrees: Fire Science Technology from Southern Technical Institute, and both Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees from DeKalb Community College. He went on to have a distinguished career as a firefighter, rising to the rank of Captain and serving as President of the Georgia State Firemen’s Association.
A devoted family man and faithful Christian, Donald is survived by his loving wife, Sara Owens; his son, David Paul King; and his sister, Dara (Pat) McCabe. He was a cherished stepfather to Rhonda (Marty) Sparks and Alicia Pruitt. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Paula Marie (Eddie) Barnes, Marshall E. Williams Jr., Tori Pruitt, Tatum Pruitt, Tiffani Pruitt Beasley, and Travis John Pruitt (TJ); his nieces and nephew: Josh McCabe, Jordan Pathel, and Terri Peppers; and his fourteen great-grandchildren: Kyla, Zion, Kingston, Lillian, Hazeligh, Cassidy, Jamison, Elsie, Benny, Johnny, Ariel, Isla, Aryah, and Travis.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Pamela Jarrard; his siblings, Peggy McMinchen, Lowell Owens, and Dorothy "Dot" Skinner; and his parents, Thomas and Verna Owens.
A funeral service will be held on February 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Ingram Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Shoal Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Donald's strong Christian faith guided his life of service. His dedication to public service, unwavering commitment to his family, and distinguished career in firefighting left an indelible mark on his community and all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
