Georgia resident Donald Lloyd (“Don”) Swift, Jr., 79, died September 19, 2022, at his home at the Phoenix at James Creek in Suwanee, Georgia. He was born February 19, 1943, in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Donald L. Swift, Sr. and Louise Guthrie (Aiken) Swift.
Don grew up in Mobile, Alabama and was a graduate of Murphy High School, Class of 1961. After high school, he proudly served his country in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. Don married the love of his life, Karen, in Mobile in 1968. They were married for fifty-four years.
Don graduated from The University of South Alabama in 1970, but he was a lifelong fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Although he spent his career in the insurance business, Don’s talents went far beyond his work. Don could build or fix just about anything. He loved spending time outdoors and at the beach, especially with his grandchildren. Don was devoted to his family above all else.
Don was predeceased by his parents. Surviving in addition to his wife, Karen (Vanlandingham) Swift, are his daughter, Kelly S. Lewis and her husband, Tony, of Dahlonega; his son, Donald L. Swift III and his wife, Lara, of Sugar Hill; and his son Samuel Westbrook (“Wes”) Swift and his wife, Leigh, of Atlanta. He is also survived by his sister Marjorie S. Swann of Fairhope, Alabama, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at Saint Columba’s Episcopal Church at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2022, 939 James Burgess Road, Suwanee, Georgia 30024. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Don’s honor to the Memorial Fund at Saint Columba’s Episcopal Church. Donations can be sent to the Church or online at saintcolumba.net/online-giving.
