It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas McArthur (Mac) Thompson. Doug passed away March 19, 2025, after a valiant fought battle with cancer.
He was born May 14, 1942, in Cumming, Georgia to Rafe Howard & Annie Clyde Samples Thompson. Doug spent 5 ½ years in the US Army, including a tour in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. He obtained Sergeant E-5 rank and accumulated many medals, including the Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Man Badge, National Defense Service Medal, 1 O/S Bar, Sharpshooter (Rifle M-14) and Marksman (Rifle M-14), all with the First Air Calvary C 2/5. Doug was proud of his service and continued friendships and reunions with his combat buddies. Doug retired from Monitor Manufacturing and later spent 9 years in the maintenance department at Northside Forsyth Hospital. His proudest accomplishment in life was being “Pop Pop” to his beloved twin granddaughters.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents, son Douglas McArthur Thompson II, and 6 older brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lana Gooch Thompson, twin granddaughters Ashley and Breanna Thompson, Daughter in Law Hope Thompson, special friend William Pugh, and lots of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday March 26, 2025, at 11:00 am in the chapel at Ingram Funeral Home with Rev. Dee Dillin officiating, and special family friend Mike Cartee saying a few words. Interment will follow at the Georgia National Cemetary in Canton, Georgia. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday March 25, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
