Dr. Melvyn J. Williams, Sr., a lifelong learner, educator, and mentor, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, after battling various illnesses. He was 86 years old.

Born and raised in Macon, Georgia, Dr. Williams dedicated his life to education and service. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Fort Valley State College in 1965, followed by a Master’s in Education (with distinction) from the University of Georgia in 1968. His academic journey continued with a Doctorate in Education from the University of Georgia in 1972 and a Doctorate in Administration from Ohio State University in 1975. Later, he achieved a Juris Doctorate from Mercer University School of Law in 1981.

Dr. Williams began his career serving in the U.S. Navy in 1956 before transitioning to civilian roles at the U.S. Post Office and later as an educator. He worked as a teacher and coordinator of staff development for the Bibb County School System before pursuing advanced degrees. His career culminated as Director of Developmental Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta and later as a civil attorney in Macon, Georgia, where he retired in 2010.

Known by family and friends as a perennial student with an unwavering commitment to giving back, Dr. Williams was deeply passionate about mentoring others and sharing words of wisdom. He held several distinguished elected offices throughout his life, including serving on the Bibb County Board of Education and as a Bibb County Commissioner. In addition to his public service, he was actively involved in several organizations. He was a proud member of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, the Optimist Club of Macon, Georgia, Inc. and the Macon Rescue Mission Board of Directors for over 20 years and President from 1999 to 2001. As an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Life Member, he upheld the values of scholarship, leadership, and service, positively impacting those around him. His dedication to education and community has left an indelible mark on those who knew him.


Dr. Williams is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ella R. Williams of Atlanta, Georgia; his daughter, Melanise W. Pettee of Atlanta; his son, Melvyn Williams, Jr., and daughter-in-law Kay Williams of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Rose Marie Williams and Levi Melvyn Williams of Atlanta; his sister Dolores Jones, nephew Ivan Jones, niece Lisa J. Moore, nephew-in-law Tony Moore and great niece Alexa Moore of Jacksonville, Florida; and numerous extended family members across California, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia.

In accordance with family wishes, no services will be held. May his memory inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
