Edward S. Hottenstein, age 82 of Cumming, GA, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born at home on October 7, 1939, in Springfield, PA, to Louise and Edward Hottenstein. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Weidner University in Chester, PA, via the Vietnam Era GI Bill. Ed continued serving in the Naval Reserve for 28 years as an Air Traffic Controlman, retiring in 1990. Ed worked for Scott Paper Co. in the R&D divsion in Philadelphia for 25 years before transfering to the Scott Winslow paper mill in Winslow, ME. Ed worked there until Kimberly Clark purchased Scott Paper and shut down the mill. Ed then transferred to KC's R&D Division in Roswell, GA, continuing there until he retired in 2000. After retirement, Ed and his wife, Bernice, enjoyed living on and sailing their beloved sailboat "Edelweiss" on Penobscot Bay out of Rockland, ME, every summer until 2019. During the summer they also enjoyed volunteering at the Owls Head Transportation musem in Rockland, ME, where Ed's favorite and most memorable position was driving visitors around in the museums' 1913 Model T Touring cars. For the last 10 years they also volunteered as Campground Hosts at Camden Hill State Park, "retiring" at the outbreak of the Covid 19 virus pandemic. During the winter months Ed volunteered along with his beloved Border Collie, Pilot, with the Happy Tails Pet Therapy group at Northside Forsyth Hospital as well as other Nursing Homes, schools, and health facilities. Ed and Bernice also volunteered at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in Dawsonville, GA.
Ed was pre-deceased by his parents, Louise and Edward, his brother Peter and an infant son Edward Steven. He is survived by his loving wife of 60years, Bernice, two sons and their families, Eric and Michelle of Pennsylvania, and Edward and Jennifer of Georgia, and seven grand children, Jake, Kian, Sean, Adam, Reagan, Sarah, and Ethan. Also surviving Ed is his sister, Emmy Lou, and her husband, Herb Steigelman, as well as his sister-in-law Sue Hottenstein.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to Tunnel to Towers or Folds of Honor, or consonsider visiting your local Humane Society and taking an unwanted dog for a walk in Ed's memory.
