Elena Nikolova Dodova, Ph.D. Research Chemist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, passed away peacefully on Monday August 12, 2013 at age 40 surrounded by friends at Hospice Atlanta in Atlanta, GA.
Dr. Dodova was born on January 17, 1973 in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 1997 she received an M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering / Chemical Technologies from the University of Chemical Technologies and Metallurgy, Sofia, Bulgaria. Prior to continuing her education in the U.S. she worked as a Research Scientist at both the Technical University and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Bulgaria. Dr. Dodova will be remembered by many as the organizer of registration for many Winter Plasma Conferences. In 2008 she received a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the advisement of Dr. Peter Uden and Julian Tyson. Since 2008 Dr. Dodova worked in the laboratories of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA continuing to research the trace element analysis and speciation.
Outside of work Dr. Dodova was very interested in art (both pictorial and handmade jewelry) and would attend the many festivals in Atlanta.
Dr. Dodova is survived by her mother, Mrs. Lilia Marinova Dodova, and father Mr. Nikola Ivanov Dodov of Sophia, Bulgaria, and brother, Nikola and many friends.
A Memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM on August 19, 2013 at Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta.
