Furman Taylor Stansell

Furman Taylor Stansell passed away at his home in Coal Mountain Friday May 4th, 2018 at the age of 79.

He was born January 8th 1939 in Westminster, South Carolina to parents Reverend M.J Stansell and Mrs. Fannie Taylor Stansell.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ella Counts Stansell and their children Steven Stansell, Tracy Stansell and Cory and Sheila Stansell, all of Cumming. He was loved greatly by five grandchildren; Georgia Joshua Holley, Drew Stansell, Ella and Callie Stansell and by one Great-Grandson Noah Jackson Holley. He is also survived by his sister Lorene Glymph and a brother Truett Stansell both of Westminster, South Carolina as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother and father as well as his brothers and sisters Jack Stansell, Helen Cody, Audrey Jean Smith and M.J. Stansell.

Furman graduated from Auburn University in June 3rd,1960 receiving his Business and Economics degree. During his time at Auburn he was asked to join Delta Sigma Pi a Business and Professional Mens Honor Fraternity where he was chosen on a scholastic basis. At that time only 30 members had ever been chosen at Auburn. He also graduated from The School of Banking of The South at LSU.

After graduation Furman served in the United States Army in Columbia, South Carolina at Fort Jackson and was an Army Reserve for many years following. During this time he was hired by the U.S Government as a National Bank Examiner for the United States Treasury Department. He met his wife of 56 years Mary Ella Counts of Decatur, Georgia at Wesleyan College where she attended and they married December 16th, 1961.

After marriage they moved to Tallahassee, Florida where there son Steven was born. Immediately after his birth they moved to Cumming during the Summer of 1964 where Mr. Roy Otwell, President of the Bank of Cumming hired him as a cashier where he later became Vice President in 1967. Before he retired in 2000 he sold insurance for state agencys in Georgia and was later in sales for Leeman Bennett Ford.

Furman was very active in the community in the 1960s and 1970s and was President of the local Kiwanis Club, President of the Jaycees and President of Sawnee Mountain Country Club during the same time. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge of Cumming then joined the Yaraab Temple of Atlanta. Furman was President of the Booster Club of Forsyth County High School and coached many youth sports. Furman also served as a Cumming City Councilman. Furman was a member of the building commity and raised funds for the Educational Building used for Sunday School at The Cumming First Baptist Church where he was a member and superintendent of the Young Marrieds Sunday School Department.

Visitation for friends and family will beTuesday May 8th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.at Ingram Funeral Home. Funeral service will be heldon Wednesday May 9th at 11:00 a.m.in the Chapel at Ingrams Funeral Home with Pastor Barry Crocker officiating. Interment will follow in Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.
