George W Barron

George William Barron, Sr. 91 passed into eternal rest peacefully Tuesday February 2, 2016 at his home in Alpharetta, Georgia surrounded by those he loved, his family. George was born March 29, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA to George Rutherford Barron and Carrie Eleanor Barron.

His legacy is carried on by his high school sweetheart and wife of 70 years this month Alice Mary Barron (nee Graham), his 5 children, 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

The couple met at the Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Church fair in Philadelphia when Alice was 16 and George was 17. Alice won his heart forever that day. George was awarded a football scholarship at Georgia Tech and played football under Coach Bobby Dodd where he was an SEC champion in 1944 which took him to the 1945 Orange Bowl. Before graduating he was pursued by the Philadelphia Eagles but World War II called and George answered. The couple married February 21, 1946 in Atlanta when George returned after the war to finish his education at Georgia Tech.

During World War II George served in the Navy and after the war in the Naval Reserves. Following graduation George and Alice moved to Tampa, Florida. It was there, he excelled in sales while working for Prudential. His success was rewarded with a promotion to Manager of the Atlanta division in 1969 which he led for 23 years. Before moving from Tampa he was appointed by the Governor of Florida to the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority to lead the design and building of the Tampa International Airport. He also served as president of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association.

While George was successful in business his greatest joy was his family. George enjoyed sharing his passion for aviation, golf and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid photographer and no surprise his favorite subject to capture was his family. He is survived by his beautiful wife Alice, his sister Edna Mae, 5 children, Christine Macaulay (and husband Dr. John Macaulay), George Jr. (and wife Vonna) , Charles (and wife Patty), Gregory and Mark. His grandchildren include Mark, Christina, Kimberly, Amy, George III, David, Michael, Courtenay, Meghan, Whitney, Ashley, Brett, Matthew, Jason, Graham and Grant. Additionally 19 great grandchildren including George William Barron IV.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday February 6, 2016 at 3:00pm at Saint Benedict Catholic Church 11045 Parsons Rd. Johns Creek, Georgia 30097. Private burial service will be Monday February 8, 2016 at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
