Hazel Ruth Sturdivant, 88, of Cumming, Georgia passed away peaceably on January 21, 2014 with members of her family by her side. Born June 3, 1925 in Atlanta, Georgia she was the daughter of the late Ira E. Mashburn and Bessie Mashburn. Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Walter Henry Sturdivant, founder of the Sturdivant School of Music; by 2 sisters, Inez Pritchard, Beth Puri; and by 3 brothers, Q.B. Mashburn, Melvin Mashburn and Allen Mashburn. Hazel graduated from Canton High School and Toccoa Falls Institute. She worked with several companies as an executive secretary and sales assistant while raising a family. When not working or handling family duties, Walter and Hazel enjoyed the outdoors - camping, fishing and relaxing at their cabin on Lake Hartwell Georgia where the family spent many hours enjoying the outdoors together. They also enjoyed sightseeing and traveled extensively after Walter's retirement. Hazel was active is her local communities of Atlanta, Norcross, Buford and Cumming, Georgia. Her love of dancing turned into a teaching career later in life. As a Line Dance instructor, Hazel was actively teaching her craft at the Roswell Adult Recreation Center and Pals Program in Roswell, Georgia. She would take her students to nursing homes and recreation centers to demonstrate Line Dancing. Hazel is survived by her children, Kenneth Bryan Sturdivant (Karen) of Cumming Georgia, Sheila Gail Long (Steve) of Maryville, Tennessee, and Peggy Laverne Johnson (Dave) of Dawsonville, Georgia; 2 granddaughters, Carly Hudolin and April Cornwell; 2 grandsons, Jonathan Roberts and Cory Johnson; 4 great-grandchildren, Cody Gideon, Lainey Hudolin, Stephen Cornwell, and Daisy Cornwell; 2 sisters, Dimple Wade of Jacksonville, Florida and Nancy Sapp of Smyrna, Georgia. In Lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Hazel Sturdivant's name to www.bbfantasycamp.org, a non profit Baseball Fantasy Camp for Kids. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia with Pastor Troy Shaw officiating.
