Horace Dewey Trammel

Horace Dewey Trammel, 91, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at a hospital in north Georgia following a period of declining health. Born Feb. 3, 1932, in Dawsonville, Georgia, Horace never left the Georgia mountains and lived in Dawson, Forsyth, and Gilmer counties. He grew up plowing fields on a sharecropper’s farm, and his family was poor like most in north Georgia. Horace was the first Trammel in his family to graduate from high school, which he did in 1948.

Horace worked for the Georgia Department of Transportation, and later became a developer and builder. He and his brother, Bobby, built one of the first, large subdivisions in Forsyth County. Later in life, Horace was appointed or elected to a number of positions in the county and state. He was elected chairman of the Forsyth County Democratic Party and served 12 years during the 1970s-80s — back then, the party was conservative. When Zell Miller ran for governor, Horace supported him and he won. Afterwards, local politicians sought Horace’s advice and support. Horace volunteered and served as President of the Forsyth County Little League, Chairman of the Athletic Association, Chairman of the Forsyth County Water and Sewer Authority, and he was a member of the boards of Forsyth County Planning and Zoning, Tax Equalization, and Tax Assessors. In addition, for 13 years, he served on the Forsyth County Department of Family and Children’s Services. Horace had a servant’s heart filled with kindness for family, friends, and strangers. His word was his bond. 

In January 2002, Horace was appointed a member of Governor Roy Barnes’ Advisory Council for Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse.

Horace accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior on the 3rd Thursday night of August 1954, at Haw Creek Baptist Church in Forsyth. He received his license to be a Baptist minister on January 2, 1971, and he comforted many along their life’s journey. Horace belonged to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Dawsonville. 

Horace was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Bernice Tolbert-Trammel, his daughter Joan Trammel-Tinsley, and son Tommy Trammel. He is survived by his sister, ShirleyAnn; brothers, J.W. and Bobby; grandchildren, Tiffany Marie, D.C. and Zachary; great-grandchildren, Destiny, Devyn, and Zane, and those special people who became his loving family: Linda and Steve Brown, Shelly Brown, Kelly Webster, Cody and Amanda Gayton, Alan Dover, and Kimberly Boim.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. Max Padgett officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
