Hubert Carlyle Platt, 83, died Saturday September 26th in hospice care after a short illness. Hubert was born December 8, 1931 in Conway, South Carolina and was raised in and around the beautiful beaches of Little River, South Carolina. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1958 and made Georgia his lifelong home, eventually making a home in the Atlanta suburb of Cumming, Georgia. Hubert was a pioneer and legend in the sport of drag racing. He entered the sport during its infancy in the 1950's and went on to be inducted into nine different drag racing Hall of Fames. His greatest achievement was receiving the National Hot Rod Association's Lifetime Achievement award for his contribution to the sport. "The Georgia Shaker" was beloved by the racing industry but most of all by his many fans. He continued to travel and promote the sport of drag racing his entire life. Hubert is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Leon Platt and Elizabeth Pender Platt, both of Little River, South Carolina and three brothers, Joseph C. Platt, Heyward "Buddy" Platt, and Huston D. Platt. He is survived by a sister, Mabel Platt Hamer of Bennetsville, S.C., a brother H. Ray Platt of The Villages, Florida and by his wife, Linda Platt and three step children. He has two sons, Hubert C. Platt, Jr, of Woodstock, GA and Timothy Allen Platt of Atlanta, GA and one daughter, Lynette Platt Royal of Medford, Oregon and their spouses. Hubert was blessed with six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Monday, September 28th at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia at 1:00 PM. A viewing will be held to greet family and friends on Monday at 11:00 AM prior to the service.
