James Andrew Porterfield

James Andrew Porterfield, (Drew), 53, of Canton, Georgia, passed away after a courageous fight with cancer on September 22, 2024.

Drew was born December 26, 1970 in Athens, Georgia, the son of James C. & Rose Porterfield. He gave his heart to Jesus at the young age of 6 and never looked back. 

Drew graduated from Henderson High School in 1989, then went on to earn a BA of Communications from the University of Georgia. He continued his education, earning a Master of Divinity in Church Growth from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Drew followed God’s call to ministry right out of college and served the local church in several different roles in Georgia and in Florida. After 13 years in the local church, he transitioned to denominational roles in the metro Atlanta area and then served at Lifeway Christian Resources in Nashville, Tennessee for 11 years as the Director of Live Digital Events. In July of 2023, he moved back into church ministry when he accepted the call to Midway Community Church in Alpharetta, Georgia to become their Family and Children’s Pastor.

Drew loved camping, hiking, jeeping, and beaching and spending quality time with his family and two dogs, Piper and Georgia. A rabid Bulldog, he also loved to bark along with his family during UGA football games. 

Drew is survived by Stephanie, his beloved wife of 28 years; his 3 children of whom he was so proud, Joshua, Lara, and Caleb; parents, James and Rose of Atlanta; brothers, Paul (Joey) of Macon, and Tim (Lauren) of Roswell; sister, SaraRose of Macon; nephews, Nate (Ayasa), Cason, Hunter, and Walker; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and friends whom he loved dearly.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 29 at 2:00 pm at Midway Community Church, 3365 Francis Rd. Alpharetta, GA 30004, immediately followed by a celebration of his life at 3:00 pm, with Rev. Dean Ropp officiating. In honor of Drew’s love for all things UGA, please wear your best red & black attire.

Someone will be at Midway Community Church on Francis Road between 9:00 am & 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 28 to accept floral deliveries.
