Janet Bailey Loftis Cahoon, 80, of Gainesville, Ga., entered her eternal rest on October 23 after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Lavon Bailey; brother Everett Bailey Jr. and stepson, Adam Cahoon.
She is survived by her husband, Sumner Cahoon, daughter, Debi Loftis and son, Robert (Sarah) Loftis, grandsons, Adam and Alexander Loftis; sisters Patricia (Burl) Neal and Deona (Jim) Pavik; brother Kenneth (Wendy) Bailey; stepsons, Roger (Tina) Cahoon and Dan (Charlotte) Cahoon; grandsons, Michael and Thomas Cahoon; great-granddaughters Hazel and Nora; and granddaughter, Kathryn Cahoon; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Jan was a true lover of people. Anyone who entered into her circle of love was made tofeel accepted and cared for. This gift for loving people was expressed beautifully in her fifty plus years of medical service, giving comfort and healing as she worked with some of the top doctors in the Piedmont and Emory systems.
Art was another way Jan expressed herself and spread joy to others. Her commissioned work as well as her gifts of art hang on the walls of homes throughout the state of Georgia and across the country.
Anyone who ever sat at Jan’s table can attest to the love and skill Jan put into her culinary efforts. She not only blessed many at her table but she frequently brought special dishes and birthday cakes to brighten the lives of others. Her passion for fine food was passed on to her children Debi and Robert and they became skilled chefs themselves.
Alongside her abilities as a cook, Jan was known for her lovely vegetable and flower gardens. Fresh produce enhanced the quality of her dishes, and fine flowers added their beauty to many homes as well as adorning the altars of her church. Her garden provided the backdrop for weddings and other celebrations.
People, art, cooking, travel, golf, pets and nature filled her life. They were her passions.
Jan was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit where she and Sumner were dedicated servants in the food pantry for ten years. They served in that role until health issues intervened.
Jan loved and was loved by many and she will be greatly missed.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
