John F Barnes, of Gainesville, Georgia, formerly of Athens, Georgia, passed away May 16, 2018 at the age of 93.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Carter, and two grandsons and their families, John Carter (Jessica) and Daniel Carter (Michelle and Austin). He is also survived by one sister, Emily Porter of Athens, sisters-in-law, Ruth Barnes of Mansfield, Georgia, Jeanette Thompson, Athens, Georgia, brother-in-law, John Simmons, Athens, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was born September 3, 1924, in Farrar, GA and grew up in several farming communities around Athens. He graduated from Oconee County High School in 1942. He served in the US Army 755th Railroad Shop Battalion in the European theater during World War II. He retired from the US Post Office in Athens as a Quality Control Officer in 1979. John was a member of the VFW Post 2872 in Athens for over 70 years. He was a member of First Baptist Cumming and the Welcome Bible Fellowship Group. John grew up on a farm and never lost his love for the land and for growing vegetables. He once said he had farmed for over 80 years. He always had an abundant harvest, and he took great pleasure in sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends.
The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia on Monday, May 21st from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A service celebrating Johns life will be held at Ingram Funeral Home on Tuesday at 11:00 am with Dr. Bob Jolly officiating. Members of the Welcome Bible Fellowship Group will serve as honorary pall bearers. There will be a graveside service at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Athens, Georgia, at 3:00 pm. Mr. Bob Molleur, a deacon and Johns Sunday School Teacher at Beech Haven Baptist Church will be officiating at that service.
