John Robert Callahan

Mr. John Robert Callahan, age 84, of Cumming passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 2, 1929 in Lima, OH and attended the University of Dayton on a football scholarship. While at the university, he was also a member of the ROTC. Following graduation, he received a commission as an officer in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. Mr. Callahan moved to Atlanta in 1961 and began his career with Swagelok until he retired in 1993. He was an avid golfer and sportsman. Mr. Callahan is preceded in death by his first wife, Adele Wise Callahan and his brothers and sisters, Mary Jane Burns, Francis Callahan, Jr., Patricia Steiner and Bertha Elizabeth Williams. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Callahan; children, Susan Callahan, Kevin and Joyce Callahan, Shaun and Kathy Callahan, Colleen and David Holbrook, Mary and Lavon Smith; step-children, Trese Martin, Kay Aukerman, Jay Bersch, Steve Bersch and Dawn Hester; a brother, Thomas B. Callahan; grandchildren, Jesse Garcia, Robert, Michael and Claire Callahan, Tyler and Casey Holbrook, Roger Smith and Brittany Hastings; and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a special man that always had a smile on his face. He was a loving, generous man with a huge heart of gold. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, February 19, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Monica's Catholic Church, in Duluth, with Fr. Jack Durkin as Celebrant. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday the hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Univeristy of Dayton Scholarship Fund or the American Cancer Society.
