Julia Gennett Bettis

Julia Gennett Bettis, age 92, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025. Julia was preceded in death by her mother and father, Capitola, and Carl Bettis. She was also preceded in death by all her siblings; Rev. Charles Bettis, Horace P. Bettis, Allie Mae Bettis, Martha Bettis and Ruth Bettis. Except for Rev. Charles Bettis, who entered the ministry and served as a college professor, all remaining siblings stayed on the family farm. None of the siblings married. Lifelong residents of Forsyth County, Georgia, Julia and her family lived on a “century farm,” a farm acquired by her father and mother early in the 20th century. Julia was the last of the “Bettis Girls” as she and her sisters were affectionately known. Their unique existence and self-sufficiency became the subject of a doctoral dissertation and the wonder of their acquaintances and family. Each family member had assigned duties and activities which included barbering, sewing, baking, cattle operations, blacksmithing, and general farming. Julia was a utility player and enjoyed baking, gardening and most of all, helping brother Horace with farming. Known for her wit and humor, she enjoyed friends and visitors who often came by the farm for fresh milk, sewing projects or haircuts. Julia was famous for her coconut cakes that were immensely popular during holidays.

Julia was survived by a number of cousins including Phill Bettis, Stan Bettis and Bryan Bettis who assisted Julia in her final years of life. Julia’s family want to thank her caretakers who provided for her comfort and company for many years, including Sylvia Chester, Amber Leverington, Renee Byrd, Joey Couch along with Dianne Parker and Amy Massey. Additionally, the family expresses thanks to Jammie Fortner and Angels Assist Personal Care Services and friends and neighbors who visited and cared for Julia.

Julia was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, and her visitation and service will be conducted there on Monday January 13th, 2025. Visitation will be between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at which time the service for Julia will begin. The service will be conducted by Rev. Doug Carnes, Rev. Pete Martin, and Rev. Jamie Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Julia’s honor to Bethlehem Baptist Church or the Hightower Baptist Association Food Bank.
