Lawrence Thomas Haddock Jr

Maj. Lawrence Thomas Haddock, Jr. (U.S.A.F., Ret.), of Cumming, GA, passed away Sunday, June 22. He was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born December 9, 1917 in Snow Hill, Maryland. He graduated from Snow Hill High School in 1935 and attended college in Delaware. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Beatrice Imogene Haddock. He was inspired by Charles Lindbergh's flight over the Atlantic Ocean in 1927 and followed the flight with his mother, Grace. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corp at Langley Field, Virginia in November 1936 as a Private with the 2nd Bombardment Group. He retired from the 3rd Bombardment Group as a Major at Yakota Air Base in Japan in September 1963. His service included World War II in Europe and Asia including Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Tinian. He also served in Korea during the Korean War and Vietnam in Troop Carrier Operations. He was stationed at numerous bases in the United States and served in the Army of Occupation in Germany and in Japan after World War II. He was Flight Acceptance Test Pilot for the U.S. Air Force at the Lockheed - Georgia Company in Marietta, GA. During his career, he flew and instructed in various aircraft including the B-17, B-47, and C-130. As a youth working on the family farm, he would always stop work to follow the flight of a passing aircraft from horizon to horizon, much to the frustration of his father. He was able to realize his childhood dream of becoming an aviator and fly aircraft throughout his career. Later in life, while working on his farm, he would still stop work to view the condensation trails left by aircraft flying over Atlanta. Survivors include his son, Lawrence T. Haddock, III of Atlanta; a sister, Janet Haddock Cooper of Snow Hill, MD; granddaughters, Heidi and Daniel Moriarty and Casey Jene Haddock; and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 26, at 11:00 A.M. at Cumming First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathie Staskso officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home on June 25th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
