Marcus “Lamar” Meers

We are saddened to announce the loss of Marcus “Lamar” Meers of Free Home, Georgia. He was 71 years old. Lamar was a devoted husband, incredible father, loving “Paw-Paw”, loyal brother, and friend. Lamar lived and was active in the Free Home Community his whole life. He was a lifetime member of New Harmony Baptist Church. We take solace in knowing that Lamar knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and that heaven is now his home.

Lamar worked at the General Motors Assembly plant in Doraville, Georgia for 35 years, starting on the assembly line (night shift) and working his way to being a trainer and manager in the trim department. He was a member of the local United Auto Workers (UAW-10). Lamar served as an election official after his retirement from General Motors. He served at the Holbrook Campground volunteer fire department for over 40 years. He umpired baseball and softball for more than half his life, being awarded as NGAUA fast pitch umpire of the year in 2007, being inducted to the Cherokee County Parks and Recreation Hall of Fame in 2009, and being accepted into the National Indicator Society.

Lamar enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid Atlanta Braves and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets fan. He enjoyed movies, collecting coins and images of lighthouses. Most weekends he could be found at the home of his niece, Lorie Henderson, enjoying some good food and sweets, and playing cornhole.

Lamar is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Meers (Biddy) of Free Home; parents Dewey and Lorene Meers (Seabolt) of Free Home.

He is survived by his daughter Amanda Zellner of Cumming, GA; son Matthew (Courtney) Meers of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren Ashtyn Zellner, Loretta Meers, and Maverick Meers; brother Phil (Tina) Meers of Holbrook Campground.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00pm on Monday, October 2nd at New Harmony Baptist Church (4952 Heardsville Road, Cumming GA 30028) with Reverends Matthew Meers, Johnny Purcell, Donnie Nix, and Pete Martin presiding.
