Marie Pirkle Hammond

Marie Pirkle Hammond, 90, a life-long resident of Georgia, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 19, 2015. She was born to Hebron Taylor and Lizzie (Hardin) Pirkle on April 22, 1925 in Silver City (Cumming), Georgia. She grew up on a large farm with 8 brothers and 2 sisters. She attended Georgia State University and her first job was with Lockheed. She also worked for the Life Ins Co. of Georgia, where she won a beauty contest as "Miss Life of Georgia." Marie married Navy veteran, James Oxford Hammond, on Nov. 24, 1948 and they honeymooned in Niagara Falls. Marie & Jim lived in Cedartown, Canton, LaGrange, and Barnesville and finally moved to Atlanta (Sandy Springs) in 1964. They had one daughter, Mary Suzanne. Marie enjoyed playing and teaching bridge, cooking, traveling, entertaining, square dancing, volunteering in her community and was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs. Marie loved her family and delighted in spending time with her brothers and sisters, her many nieces and nephews and her many wonderful friends. Marie worked for Rich's Department Store at Lenox Square and transferred to Perimeter Mall when it was built. When she retired from Rich's, she & Jim enjoyed many years of retirement and thoroughly enjoyed traveling. Marie is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Hammond Wilson and son-in-law Edward Gordon Wilson of Glennallen, Alaska, three sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Pirkle, Grace Pirkle, and Pauline Pirkle, and brother-in-law Jodie Hill. She is also survived with many beloved nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her loving husband, James Oxford Hammond, her parents, H.T. & Lizzie Pirkle, her brothers, Lewis Pirkle, Theodore Pirkle, Frank Pirkle, John (and Dorothy) Pirkle, Henry Pirkle, Marshall (and Dorothy) Pirkle, George (and Frances) Pirkle, Cleon Pirkle and two sisters, Faye (and Charlie) Kellogg, and Blanche Pirkle Hill. The Visitation will be Saturday, June 27 at 1:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs, followed by the funeral at 2:00 pm. The funeral will be officiated by Rev. David Shivers and Dr. Jimmy Orr. The burial will be at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery in Silver City (Cumming).Flowers are being accepted at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia.
