Marilyn Mathis Walthall, 69, of Cumming, Georgia, died Wednesday September 28, at her home. She was born April 2, 1947 in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Wilbur S. Mathis and Juanita Curlee Mathis. She graduated from Brown High School in Atlanta before attending Georgia State University, where she earned a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Piano Performance and was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon. An accomplished classical pianist and organist, she accompanied Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus. In addition to performing professionally, she also taught hundreds of children and adults private piano and music theory at The Lovett School, Kennesaw State University, and for fifty years, out of her home. She also developed and led the Applied Lessons Program at The Lovett School. During her career, she was an accompanist for the Atlanta Boy Choir and a church organist for more than thirty years. Other interests included reading, golf, spending time with friends and family, and frequent travel to the coast. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Joseph E. Walthall III of Atlanta and her daughter Judy (Tracy) Ireland of Cumming; two grandsons, Clark Ireland and Darcy Ireland of Cumming; two brothers, Shannon (Ellen) Mathis of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, and Mark Mathis of Luthersville, Georgia. A Visitation will be held Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 3:00-5:00 PM at the Ingram Funeral Home, 210 Ingram Avenue, Cumming, Georgia.
