Mary Drew passed away on January 13, 2009 at the grand age of 96. A graduate of Tift College, she served our country in WWII as First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, then served our community as a teacher in the Atlanta area for 30 years. During that time, she earned two graduate degrees from Georgia State University. A long time member and pianist for the Druid Hills Baptist Church, she was one of the first women to be honored as a deacon. She directed the Life Enrichment program in Dekalb County and was an honorary member of the Decatur Lions Club. Mary would consider her greatest achievement to be raising her son, John, who survives her, along with her grandsons, Ben and Jeff, her daughter-in-love, Cay, her niece, Billie Bennett Ward, and nephews, Joe Bennett and Jim Bennett. She is greeted in heaven by her brothers, Conyers, Joe and Bill Bennett, and her niece, Kathleen Bennett.
A memorial service will be held at Druid Hills Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 17 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Druid Hills Baptist Church or the Decatur Lions Club.
