Mr. Melvin Stancil, age 83, of Cumming, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011. He was a preceded in death by his parents, Vandiver and Caroline Seabolt Stancil; a son, Jeffery Melvin Stancil and 7 brothers and sisters. A U. S. Army veteran, Mr. Stancil served in the Korean Conflict. He retired from General Motors after 33 years of service where he served as an officer in several U.A.W. positions, most importantly as the Region 8 Atlanta Area Recording Secretary and Vice Chairman, Local 10 U.A.W. Retirees. Civically, Mr. Stancil served on the Lake Lanier Regional Library Board for 26 years and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Forsyth County Public Library. He was the Forsyth County Voter Registrar for 17 years and won the Top Georgia Registrar award in 2000 which is the Frances Duncan Award, named after the first woman to serve as the director of states Election Office. Mr. Stancil also served as President of the Georgia Voter Registrar Association in 1996-1997. He was also Superintendent of Elections for Forsyth County, serving in that position for 15 years. Mr. Stancil was named as one of the Men of Forsyth in 1998. He was also named to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc. in 2002 and was appointed a Melvin Jones Fellow in that same year. He was a member of the Forsyth County Lions Club for 25 years, serving as President in 1998-1999 and as Zone Chairman 18-D in 1992-1993. Survivors include wife, Beverly Barnett Stancil of Cumming; son, Rob Stancil of Cumming; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Marylian Stancil; sister and brother-in-law, Gerry and Mack Lummus; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Barbara Barnett; sister-in-law, Margie Tate; special friends, Ralph and Joann Cowart. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 2, at 2:00 at Cumming Baptist Church with Dr. Barry Crocker, Rev. John Lummus, Rev. Gerald Blackburn and Rev. Bud Sutton officiating. Interment will follow in Sawnee View Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until hour of service at the funeral home.
