Michael John Doherty

Michael John Doherty died unexpectedly on December 27, 2020, at the age of 47, in Cumming, Georgia. Mike was the youngest son of the late Daniel Joseph Doherty, Jr., Esq., and Gail H. Doherty (nee Howard). Mike is survived by his mother, his brothers, Daniel J. Doherty III, Esq., and his wife, Liese C. Doherty (nee Carrington); Dr. Mark S. Doherty, PhD., and his wife, Mandy Aiello; his sister, Jill-Marie Doherty Short and her husband James K. Short; his nephews, Britton J. Short and his wife, Kendra B. Short (nee Barker); Tanner J. Short and his fiancée, Ashley Wright; Dellan J. Short; Tyler S. Doherty; Matthieu S. Doherty; his niece, Whitney L. Aiello; and his great nephew Whitner B. Short.

Mike graduated from South River High School in Edgewater, Maryland, in 1991. While at South River, Mike played varsity soccer and lacrosse, a sport in which he excelled, backstopping the Seahawks in their playoff run as the starting goalkeeper in his senior season. Mike continued playing lacrosse at the collegiate level, first for Anne Arundel Community College and then for Virginia Wesleyan College (now University). Mike graduated from VWC in 1996, having flourished "between the pipes" during his playing years. He still holds the record for Most Saves in a Season (1995) (313); and is second for Most Career Saves (1994-5) (665); Best Save Percentage in a Season (1995) (.681) and Best Career Save Percentage (1994-5) (.627). In 1995, Mike was selected as an All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference 1st Team recipient and was voted ODAC Goalkeeper of the Year. Mike's 1995 Save Percentage ranked 2nd in the nation amongst all NCAA programs.

Mike's love of sport reached beyond lacrosse, as he was a fan of all things Notre Dame. One could count on finding Mike watching the Irish on any given Saturday. Mike is preceded in death by his beloved cat, "Dame." Mike's other passion was NASCAR, and he passed on his love for auto racing, lacrosse and sport in general to his niece and nephews. Mike will be remembered for his infectious smile, his hearty hugs and his love of family.

The family has chosen cremation, although no service will be held. A grave side service will take place at the family plot in Massachusetts, when health and travel conditions permit. The family is grateful for condolences, but declines flowers and donations.

Ingram Funeral Home and Crematory, 210 Ingram Ave; Cumming, GA is in charge of the arrangements.
