Michael William Morrell passed away on March 24, 2022, at his home in Cumming, Georgia.
Born November 10, 1941, in South Boston, Massachusetts the oldest child to the late Harrison and Helen (Dunphy) Morrell.
Michael was married to the love of his life, Kathy Morrell for almost 53 years. He was a long-time employee at BLH Electronics, Tellabs Wireless and General Electric in Massachusetts. While growing up in South Boston, Michael was a champion competitive swimmer and diver. When he joined the US Navy, Mike then won numerous awards on the Navy Swim Team. Following his Navy service, Mike stayed in San Diego, one of his favorite places, for an additional two years, where he surfed and enjoyed playing guitar in a coffee house while being a beach boy.
Michael moved back to Massachusetts in 1968 where he met Kathy, his “Bride”, as he still called her. They bought a home in Woburn, Massachusetts where they lived for 36 years. While in Woburn, Michael continued following his love of competitive coaching as a US Swim Coach at pools in Wakefield, Belmont, Woburn and Medford, Massachusetts. Mike was a Coach beloved by his many swimmers. He instilled great discipline into his athletes through his coaching and so many of those kids still remember and love him for helping them to become exceptional young adults.
Michael and Kathy moved to Cumming, GA in 2008 to begin their retirement on Lake Lanier. Not being one to sit around, Michael founded his own Georgia swim team, NGA Aquatics, and was a well-respected USA Swim Coach until he truly retired in 2016. He was an extraordinary technical Coach. While coaching on his teams, he taught both of his children, Chrissie and Tim and then later his grandchildren, Zach and Halle to all become decorated swimmers.
Michael loved spending time on the lake with his sailboat, playing Bridge at the Senior Center, meeting his friends for Monday morning breakfasts, playing archery and lazy Sundays on the front porch playing the guitar.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Harrison and Helen (Dunphy) Morrell, his brother William Morrell, his nephew, Scot Poulack, his brother-in-law (Robert Barrett), his sisters-in-law Eileen (McDonough) Morrell and Susan (Lydon) Morrell.
