Nancy J. Oxley passed away peacefully on December 29th, 2021. Her legacy will be the many people touched by her kindness, her intellect, her sharp wit, and her loving nature.
She was born to the late Thelma and Ernest A. Raun of Denison, Iowa on June 3rd, 1940. Raised in Denison in the 1940's and 1950's with her late sister Barbara (Raun) Barton, she graduated from Denison High School, and set out west to start college at the University of Nebraska in 1958.
Nancy met the love of her life, Paul L. Oxley after graduating from Nebraska in 1962. They were married in 1966, and had two children, Douglas Oxley and Susan (Oxley) Sheen, as well as three grandchildren, Ellinor Sheen, Cameron Sheen, and Griffen Sheen. She was a loving mother-in-law to Corey Sheen and Susan Kretschmar Oxley. She also loved her cats, and they loved her. She was a kitty mother to the late Sniffles, Fluffy, Puffy, Snowball, Tyler, Chaucer, and Kipper. She is survived by her kitties, Kira and Simba. Her family never let on that we knew that the greeting cards we received from the cats were written in her handwriting. Nancy lived in many parts of the United States, and wherever she lived, she found extraordinary people to become great friends. She found lifelong friends while living in Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Georgia.
Education was her career and one of this fiery red-head's lifelong passions. At Nebraska, Nancy joined Kappa Kappa Gamma, and served as its Treasurer. Both her daughter, Susan, and her granddaughter, Ellie, followed in her footsteps by joining the Kappa's at Nebraska. She graduated from the Teachers College in 1962 and loved the Cornhuskers for the remainder of her life. She returned to Iowa for jobs as an elementary school teacher in Sioux City and Iowa City. While there, she attended graduate school at the University of Iowa. Later in life, Nancy was honored to be a recipient of the Alumni Family Tree Award from the University of Nebraska Alumni Association. She was also proud of her career working in a pediatrics office in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
Nancy and Paul traveled extensively around the U.S. and the world to explore and visit with friends and family. She enjoyed following Nebraska athletics teams, and especially Husker football. She would make annual visits to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln for a game.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on January 7, 2022 with visitation beginning at 2:00 pm. It will be held at Ingram Funeral Home at 210 Ingram Ave., Cumming, GA 30040.
