Patricia Mangum Jones

Patricia Mangum Jones, 71, beloved wife of Stephen M. Jones, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away August 21, 2018, at her home after a short illness. Born March 22, 1947, she grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of A.J. and Dorothy Sanders Mangum.

Pat graduated from Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing in 1968, and moved to Atlanta in 1970, where she met and married Stephen M. Jones in 1972. She worked at Emory Hospital and became a patient of Dr. Paul Davidson. In 1981 Dr Davidson put her on an insulin pump. This is why she was able to manage her diabetes so well and lived so long without ever developing complications of diabetes. Pat was the first one in Georgia to have this pump, and possibly the first one in the U.S. as Dr. Davidson was the first one using this technology. Due to Dr. Davidson, the pump, and the fact that Pat was a nurse, is probably why she did so well with her diabetes. Pat went to work at Shallowford Hospital as a staff nurse on the first Diabetes Treatment Center, and a floor nurse on the diabetes specialty unit established there is 1985. Pat was the founding member of Greater Atlanta Association of Diabetes Educators in 1986, and held the office of president from 1988-1989. She was the co-chair for the Annual Meeting Host Committee for the American Association of Diabetes Educators in Atlanta in 1993. Pat went to work with the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Chronic Disease Prevention Section in 1998, She worked with the Division of Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, to reduce death and disability from stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases to low-income clients in receiving care through the public health department. She also participated in writing the "Standard Nurse Protocol for Diabetes Mellitus in Adults" for the Georgia Health Departments.

Honors include: 1989 Scholarship Award by The Advanced Studies Institute for Diabetes Education; 1989 Scholarship Award by The American Association of Diabetes Educators; Patricia Babin Educator of the Year, awarded by The Greater Atlanta Association of Diabetes Educators in September, 1989; Public Servant of the Year awarded by The Atlanta Journal/Constitution, Gwinnette Extra, in April, 1990.
