R. Morris Thomas, Sr.

R. Morris Thomas, Sr, age 82 of Cumming, GA passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. Morris was born on December 19, 1940, to the late T.R. and Corinne Collins Thomas here in Forsyth County. Morris spent his formative years in the Coal Mountain community working at T.R. Thomas Mill. Morris graduated from Forsyth County High School in 1958 and has stayed in touch with many of his classmates ever since. 

Morris worked for Southern Educators Life Insurance Company for 30+ years. He retired in 1995 then went to work for Georgia Student Finance Corporation for 4 years. In retirement, the second time, Morris became “Granddaddy” to 5 grandchildren, but many more called him Granddaddy because he truly loved spoiling children whether at church, school, or in the community. Morris was active at Cumming Baptist Church and First Baptist as a Deacon. He served on many committees at both churches over the years. If there was a need, Morris (and a few of his retired friends) would step into action as needed. He was always doing for others whether at work or in retirement. Morris’s civic service was applied through the Forsyth County Lions Club for many years, not only locally but also for the state of Georgia. 

Morris married the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” Holbrook Thomas on Christmas Eve 1959. They raised three children Nancee (Jeff) Worley, Deidre (David) Miller, and Richard (Shannon) Thomas, Jr. Morris loved his children but truly adored his grandchildren, Ross (Morgan) Miller, Nate (Sarah) Miller, Glenn Worley, Nora Thomas, and Andrew Worley; nieces, Carla Holbrook and Chris Holbrook; along with many other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, T.R. and Corinne, wife, Pat, and grandson Glenn Worley.

A special thank you to the Oaks at Hampton caregivers, as well as the Caritas Hospice caregivers. Galatians 6:2 says, “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” The caregivers who so tirelessly took care of Morris did it with this verse in mind. 

Funeral services for Morris will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 3:00 pm at Cumming Baptist Church in Cumming, Georgia. Dr. Jamie Archer will officiate. Interment will follow at Sawnee View Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, April 21, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm. They will receive friends again on Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 10:00 am until the time of service.
