Rita Southwell Truelove

Rita Southwell Truelove, age 70, passed away on December 14, 2023. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was born on September 3, 1953, to the late Carl and Edith Southwell and spent her formative years in Dahlonega, Georgia. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from North Georgia College and State University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Lesley University.  She was an educator with the Forsyth and Lumpkin County School Systems for 28 years. Throughout her career, she was known for her selfless work, dedication, and compassion for her students.

But more than anything, Rita was a devoted wife and mother.  She loved spending time with her family and sharing stories about her grandchildren with her beloved friends and extended family.  She was an inspiring source of strength for her family and always provided support, and encouragement to others no matter what challenges they faced.

In her “free” time, Rita taught Jazzercise classes for over 30 years, developing cherished, lifelong friendships with fellow instructors and students.  Rita used her musical gifts to serve in multiple churches throughout her entire life before retiring in 2020 from First Baptist Church, Cumming where she was an active member for over 42 years.

Rita was preceded in death by her elder sister Barbara Southwell Justus, and her elder brother, Carlton Southwell. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Jonathan Neal Truelove, her eldest son, Cory Truelove and his wife, Yvonne, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; her youngest son, Zach Truelove and his wife, Jennifer of Canton, Georgia; her three grandchildren Logan, Murphy, and Micah Truelove. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.

A private celebration of life will be held for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
