Robert Joseph "Bobby" Van Houten passed away on June 26, 2014 aftera year-long battle with cancer. He was born in Rome, Georgia on March 12, 1945. His family moved to Decatur when he was two years old, where he grew up and graduated from St. Pius X High School, class of 1963. He attended University of West Georgia and Georgia State University, and afterwards proudly served his country as a U. S. Marine.He was predeceased by his parents, Loouis Michael Van Houten, Sr., andRosetta Magill Van Houten. Bobby retired from a long successful career in real estate and retail sales. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Anita; his brother, Michael and sister-in-law Cynthia; his sister Carol Fain and brother-in-law Jim; nephews Michael and Brian; niece Christi. The Van Houten family has a long association with Georgia Tech; thus Bobby''s abiding passion was Georgia Tech football. Everyone who knew him will remember his wry sense of humor and easy-going spirit. Bobby was most happy at his bucolic home that he built in Hickory Flat, spending time with family, pets, and friends. The family would like to thank Halcyon Hospice who provided exceptional care and support during this difficult time. Memorial gifts may be made in Bobby's name to PAW's Atlanta or the Cherokee County Animal Shelter.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
