Ruby Young Anderson, 86, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2012 at White Oaks @ Lanier in Cumming, Georgia. Ruby was born on January 18, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia to her parents Nevilles Pinckney Young and Dovell Robertson Young. Ruby was a graduate of the Durham High Class of 1944. Following graduation she went to work for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company where she met her husband, Holland Lee "Andy" Anderson. They were married for 61 years until his death in November of 2007. Ruby was the devoted mother of three children, Steven Lee Anderson, Jan D. Anderson and Lyn A. Howell . While raising her children she worked for numerous construction companies in Durham as a bookkeeper and office manager, most notably Hunt Construction Co. Ruby was an active member of Calvary Methodist Church and in her later years during the onset of dementia she and Andy were members of Bethany Methodist Church. In addition to her sense of humor, perhaps her most notable characteristic was her blunt openness and honesty. Her family and friends can all tell you that you always knew where you stood with Ruby. One of the highlights of her life was the birth of her grandson, Robert Jacob "Jake" Anderson. She truly loved watching him grow up and was so proud of his accomplishments. She loved spending time with him and attending his swim meets and school events as he grew up. Ruby lost her mother at the age of six. She and her brother Irvin were raised by her Aunt Ollie and Uncle Oscar Moss on their farm in Virginia along with her many cousins. Her sister, Irene Castle Young, died prior to Ruby's birth. Her brother, Irvin Clay Young of Raleigh, passed away in September of 2011. She is survived by her children, Steve and his wife Joann of Durham, Jan of Healdsburg, California and Lyn and husband Lyle of Alpharetta, Georgia and by her grandson, Jake and his wife Lauren of Burlington, NC. Also surviving are her step-sister, Susan Kay Young of Durham, her brother-in law James W. Anderson and her nieces and nephew, Patricia Grasser, Saribeth Dozier, Ann Birdsall, Jean Young and Clay Young. She is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews and a large number of cousins in and around Danville, Va. The family wishes to thank the staff of White Oaks @ Lanier for their kind and considerate care of Ruby for the past four plus years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the H.E.A.R.T.S. Program, in care of Karl Kimball, 1600 Hillandale Rd, Durham NC, 27705.
