Susan Barratt, aged 71, died on Saturday, December 16th, 2023, following a chronic illness. She passed away peacefully at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, surrounded by her loving family.
Susan was born on November 6th, 1952, in Norfolk, VA, to John H. Barratt, Jr., and Sylvia (Knight) Barratt. She grew up in her parents’ hometown of Gloucester, MA, and was a 1970 graduate of Gloucester High School. Although a life-long resident of Gloucester, she relocated later in life to Cumming, GA, with her family.
Susan was beloved by all who knew her. She lived life out loud, without shame or reservation. Susan never met a stranger, making anyone who knew her feel at ease. Her sense of humor was enormous, and her laugh infectious (she once won an award for “Best Laugh”). Susan loved her family fiercely, and was thrilled when she became a grandmother, doting on her three grandchildren. She made friends upon friends, some of them became her life-long extended family. She had a heart for animals, caring for many pets (“kitties” in particular) and even had a pet-sitting business. Susan loved her Lord Jesus and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Gloucester and Browns Bridge Church in Cumming. Her favorite Bible passages were Psalm 23 and I Corinthians 13. Susan also loved acting and enjoyed being on stage with her local theatre group, Theatre in the Pines (Rockport, MA). Susan was one-of-a-kind, and she will be sorely missed by her family and her many friends. The world is a little less bright without her, but Heaven is glowing with her presence.
Susan was pre-deceased by her parents John and Sylvia Barratt, as well as her beloved grandmother Doris Barratt, mother-in-law Carol Matthews, and dear friend and mentor, Nan Webber. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Kristie and Clayton Russum of Colbert, and Deirdre and Kyle Counts of Cumming. She is also survived by her three grandchildrenHarper, Hudson, and Oliver. Her life-long friends Judith Young(Charlie), Dona Williams, and Sarah Williams are also among her survivors.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Ingram Funeral Home, located at 210 Ingram Ave., Cumming, GA. Visitation and receiving will be held before the ceremony starting at 1pm. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Forsyth County HumaneSociety.
