Taylor "Nicole" Detjen, 22, passed away on September 8th after her courageous battle with cancer. Nicole grew up in Alpharetta, Georgia, where she built many wonderful friendships with neighbors and classmates. With friends by her side, Nicole actively participated in many community and school events that became tradition for her throughout the years. At an early age she became a member of the Harrington Falls Hammerheads Team of the Atlanta Swim Association which introduced her to competitive swimming. Her passion for swimming and water sports expanded into year-round swimming with Swim Atlanta (during middle school), and active participation on the Cambridge High School swim team where she held the school record for the 50 Yard Backstroke. Nicole placed in summer league state competitions for three consecutive years in the 50 Yard Backstroke event. Nicole loved children and shared her enthusiasm for swimming with them through her playful spirit. For three years she was a role model to young swimmers as a swim coach.
In 2016, Nicole graduated from Cambridge High School and from there, attended the University of Alabama. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Commerce & Business Administration on August 1, 2020, and was awarded "Outstanding Senior" for the Class of 2020 from her sorority, Pi Beta Phi. Similar to her life in Alpharetta, Nicole was fully immersed in her college experience and developed many friendships throughout her academic career.
Nicole is preceded in death by her father, Robert Detjen, her grandfather, Wilbur "Bill" Detjen, and her cousin, Molly Doub. She is survived by her mother, Sandra Detjen, her brother, William Detjen, both of Cumming, Georgia, her grandparents, Richard and Joann Doub (Andersonville, Tennessee), Margaret Detjen (Lakewood, New Jersey), Sara Jane Detjen (Sea Girt, New Jersey), five aunts, four uncles, and eleven cousins.
Nicole was beloved by the many lives she touched, and the prayers of thousands around the world gave her strength in her fight. Her Christian faith provided comfort and helped her endure the battle that was before her. She was a rare beacon of joy in the face of any circumstance. Nicole had a big heart and lived a life full of happiness and adventure. She was the "total package" - smart, beautiful, energetic, thoughtful, caring, and genuine. Nicole always had a smile on her face. A "Celebration of Life" will be held at a later date due to COVID restrictions. Nicole's wish was to establish a foundation to help college students with cancer. We are working to make this wish a reality in memory of Nicole's beautiful life.
