Thelma Green Samples, age 91, of Cumming passed away on August 18, 2014 at her home with her family at her side. Thelma was born July 14, 1923 to Grady and Mamie (Satterfield) Green. She was a member of Haw Creek Baptist Church. Thelma was known for her peanut butter cakes, coconut cakes, and her cobblers. She was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for her family. Thelma was a worker and she did not have a lazy bone in her body. Her career outside of the home was working at Internal Revenue Service's in Doraville, Georgia. Thelma was a classy dresser and always dressed for the occasion. She was outgoing and very witty. Thelma's friends always said that she was the "life of the party." She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was the best mother that any child could have and she will be missed so very much. Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, Grady and Mamie (Satterfield) Green; husband, Luther Samples; son-in-law, Charles Matas "Buck" Martin; brother and sister-in-law, Thurman and Nellie Green; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wynelle and Glen Day, Nettie Lee and W.J. "Dub" Buice , several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law also preceed her in death.. Survivors include her daughter, Zeliah Samples Martin and special friend Guy Hugh Hammond of Cumming; son and daughter-in-law, Adrian and Roberta Samples of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Lisa and Johnny Pruitt, Kristi and Thomas Jennings, and Gloria and Peter Lawton all of Cumming; great grandchildren, Brandon Jennings and Logan Jennings of Cumming and Austin Gaddis and Avery Gaddis of Dawsonville; step- grandchildren, Phyllis Bissette, Cindy Martin, and Stephanie McCord all of Cumming and Jonathan Emerson and Dr. Noah Emerson of New Orleans, Louisiana; sister-in-law, Ruth Samples Green of Cumming; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ivan "Buddy" and Betty Samples of Gainesville; special friends, J.T. and Elizabeth Lee, Carroll and Rachel Peek, and Melissa Hogan all of Cumming; caregiver and friend, Jan Hawkins of Cumming. Two special people that she was very fond of and visited her at home during their younger years were Diane Martin Gravitt and Larry Vaughan. Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive her and her faithful Doberman, Molly. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 2:00pm at Haw Creek Baptist Church with Larry Vaughan and Jerry Orr officiating, a prayer will be led by James Earl Hubbard and eulogy will be delivered by granddaughter Gloria Samples Lawton. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 20th from 9:00am until 9:00pm and Thursday, August 21st from 10:00am until 1:30pm. Interment will follow at Haw Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Thelma will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Luther and her parents. She will always be in our hearts and we love her so very much.
