Vera Eloise Weezie Simmons Marcus, 90, of Savannah, Georgia passed away peacefully on March 15, 2012. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Vera was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morton and Minnie Simmons, her late husband, Sergeant James Ray Marcus, a brother- in- law, Capt. William T. Browne and a daughter, Virginia Ginny Marcus (John) Woodcock.
Vera led a full life. Married to a POW of World War II, she traveled the world as a supportive military wife while her husband served in the United States Air Force.

After returning to Savannah, she was a live-in babysitter for many Savannah families. She loved children and their antics and watching them grow.

Vera lived in Savannah and at Tybee Island, where she was a member of the Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church. Later in life, she was a member of the Skipperville, Alabama United Methodist Church and Immanuel Baptist Church in Savannah.

She is survived by two children who loved her dearly, Carol (Larry) McCathren of Skipperville, Alabama and Jim (Mary) Marcus, of Ballground, Georgia; a sister, Juanita Simmons Browne of Savannah; eight grandchildren, Pam (George) Lewis of Dothan, Alabama, Amy (Doug) Povie, of Savannah, Georgia, Rebekah (Stephen) Quarterman of Anderson, South Carolina, Naomi (Doug) Moore of East Ellijay, Georgia, Sarah (Daniel) Zidaru of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Chris (Kimberly) Marcus, of Canton, Georgia, and Ross and Gayle McCathren of Skipperville, Georgia; thirteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 25th at 3:00 pm at Byars Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia.

Remembrances: Disabled American Veterans and the United Service Organization (USO).
