Command Sergeant Major Vernon Ray Whitten, Sr., 79, of Cumming passed away Saturday, April 1, 2017. Born March 17, 1938 in Atlanta, CSM Whitten retired after proudly serving 36 years in the U.S. Army and then worked for Ford Motor Company. A loving father and grandfather, he attended Mountain Lake Church. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Janice Whitten; children, Brandi Gaylor, Bob and Ronda Mobley, Kevin and Stephanie Norris, Ray and Sherry Whitten, Jr.; grandchildren, Felicia Crowe, Eric Ford, Ashley Ford Waters, Trevor and Molly Norris, Brittany and Jordan Whitten; great grandchildren, Chase and Chandler Crowe, Aria Whitten; sister, Lynn Ogletree; brothers-in-law, Robert Baltimore, Mike and Renee Blackstone; sisters-in-law, Delores Britt, Linda and Jerry Jacobson, Loretta and Jim Tanner; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 4, at 12:00 noon at the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with 1Lt. Anthony Pursser, Chaplain officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday the hour prior to the service.
