William (Bill) Richard Bass, Sr.

William (Bill) Richard Bass, Sr. passed away on May 20, 2021 at his home in Cumming, Georgia. Bill was born in Blackshear, Georgia on October 16, 1928, the only child of the late Pearl Crawford of Blackshear, Georgia. Bill grew up in Blackshear, attended Emory at Oxford and also The University of Georgia graduating from UGA in 1949, with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He also completed additional education at Georgia State and Columbia University in NY. He was a member of Sigma Chi (?) fraternity. He served his country honorably in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked with a Public Accounting firm in Augusta, Georgia; and later worked for Lockheed, both in Marietta, Georgia and Los Angeles, California, for over 34 years, retiring as Director of Accounting. While at Lockheed, Bill was directly involved in several airplane programs including the C-5, C-130, C-141 and Jetstar as well as serving on the Management Union Negotiating Committee. Bill loved gardening, day trading, card games and reading; he enjoyed meeting new people and investing his time with new and old friends alike. Mostly, he loved spending time with his family and creating memories with his grandchildren. Bill was a loyal member of Sandy Springs First Baptist. Close to retirement, he moved to Cumming, Georgia and joined Friendship Baptist where he was a member for more than 35 years; Bill served in many capacities such as teaching Sunday School, chairing the Finance Committee, and happily participating in most every social event. While in high school, he met and dated his future wife, Betty Jean O'Neal, and they were married on June 7, 1950. Bill and Betty were either dating or married for 70 years, enjoying a storybook marriage prior to Betty's passing in 2013. Bill is survived by his two children, Dr. William Richard Bass, Jr., (Melinda) and Rebecca Bass Daniel (John) and three grandchildren, Andrew Daniel (Emory), Kathryn Peacock (Justin) and Kelly Daniel.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church, 2250 Friendship Circle, Cumming, GA 30028 with Rev. Ricky Byrd officiating. Interment will be held on Sunday at Blackshear City Cemetery in Blackshear, GA. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest that you make a contribution to Friendship Baptist Church or Hightower Association Food Bank.
